The exhibition “Art of Baia Mare 130 (1896–2026)” was opened in cooperation with the Liszt Institute and the Embassy of Hungary in Bucharest, on the occasion of the 130th anniversary of the founding of the Nagybánya (Baia Mare) painting school, later an artists’ colony. The opening ceremony of the exhibition was attended by H.E. Katalin Kissné Hlatki, Ambassador of Hungary in Bucharest.
The welcoming speeches were conferred by András László Kósa, director of the institute, highlighting the uniqueness and the quality of the exhibition. Réka Brendus, Head of the Department of the State Secretariat for National Policy of the Prime Minister’s Office in Hungary, highlighted in her opening speech: “130 years ago, in 1896, not just a painting school was established in Baia Mare, but an approach, a creative creed, which fundamentally transformed Hungarian fine arts. An artistic milieu was born, that focused on the direct study of nature, painting in the open air, the courage of personal vision and openness to modernity. Under the leadership of Simon Hollósy, and through the work of such defining artists, as Károly Ferenczy, István Réti, János Thorma or Béla Iványi-Grünwald, a school was established that did not follow any predetermined direction, but jointly sought the truth of vision.” The exhibition was also praised by Róbert Strébeli, the curator of the exhibition (who is also the director of the County Museum of Art “Baia Mare Art Center”) and museologist Zoltán Soós.
